Restored by John Sincock, at Penpol Farm, Old Quay. In Class for 2001
Ken Williams, Mayor of Falmouth, and, in 1974, at Penryn Rugby Club Centennial
Formerly a Solent Sunbeam, Whimsey was bought and sailed, in 1958,(check year, see RSC 1954] from the Solent to Falmouth by the late
Ken Williams. Ken managed the boatyard at Ponsharden for Mr. H. Silley, (of Silley & Cox), Falmouth Docks, and had agreed to do so only on condition that Silley released Mr. Thomas from the Docks, where he was shipwright foreman. The delivery run down to Falmouth was confirmed by Ida Williams, Ken's widow, who, aged 86 remembers Whimsey was later sold to a Mr. Sincock, then of Flushing. She reminded me that Ken had also owned a Falmouth Quay Punt, Genesta. Falmouth Quay Punts will form a separate on-line topic!
Robert Sincock bought Whimsey from Thomas's Boatyard at Ponsharden in 1959, and she passed on to his son, Mr. E. Sincock, for whom Toby West regularly helmed [on his other Sunbeam, Danny?].
When Mr. E. Sincock sold Whimsey to Mr Skinner, it was with the agreement that, should Mr. Skinner decide to sell her, Mr. Sincock would have first refusal to buy her back. In the event, she was sold on to Mr. Barwell, of Helford, who honoured the same agreement and thus ownership of Whimsey passed back to Mr. Sincock. She has remained in the Sincock family's ownership, though hardly ever sailed until quite recently.
For a year or so, Ian & Roger Sincock shared Whimsey, then Roger went abroad.
For the 75th anniversary of the Sunbeam One Design Class, the Sincocks were persuaded to put Whimsey back into the water, although, perhaps, hardly fit for the events.
1999: V5 Whimsey (John & Jane Sincock, RCYC) entered The Falmouth Sunbeams 75th Anniversary Championships held 22-27 August.
Her hull colour was then Dark Green.
Some may remember an extraordinary (and best forgotten) "paint job" concocted by Ian Sincock's son, James.... since when, in the winter of 1999-2000, Whimsey was virtually rebuilt by John Sincock, a shipwright. John is an experienced Flying Fifteen helmsman and son of
Mr. E. Sincock of Penpol Farm, Old Quay, Nr. Truro. (Tel: 01872 273294)
Terry "Bomber" Holm kindly donated some sails, and there is a new mast ready for the 2001 season, at Mylor Dockyard. Hopefully John and his son, James will show her off to advantage.... in her traditional and former colour!

Most of the above was related to me in a telephone conversation with Mr. E. Sincock, who I trust will agree with the accuracy of my notes... or, correct me as soon as possible! He has offered two or three prints for scanning and display, which, I am sure, will be a pleasure for other Sunbeam devotees to view. On which note, I would be delighted to scan prints up to A3, or 35mm slides or negatives any readers feel would be of similar interest.
