Falmouth Packet [FP] Friday June 6, 1924:   FLUSHING SAILING CLUB - Sunbeam's Opening Race
Flushing Sailing Club opened its season on Saturday [31 May], and through their being the first amongst the the local clubs to make a start, they were able to provide the opening race for the newly-formed Sunbeam Class.

There was a moderate breeze from the westward when the little craft crossed the starting line in a bunch.  They made a very pretty picture and local yachtsmen can look forward during the season to some interesting races.  The wind was fluky and little satisfaction can be derived from the result as it was in yachting language "Anybody's Race"

The keeness of the owners is shown by the fact that  Berthe only arrived at Falmouth railway station on Friday [30 May] and was ready to start on Saturday.

Una carried off the honours, being a minute in front of her nearest rival Trent, Halcyone being third and about one minute behind the second boat.  With more settled conditions, some close racing can be expected.

In the Sunbeam's Race, Flame was first past the mark after a splendid race.
A slight mishap to Halcyone accounted for this little craft being so far in arrear.

FP Friday 11 July, 1924: Yacht racing - The Sunbeams
The thanks of a grand number of Falmothians are due to the members of the Falmouth Sunbeam Club for the excellent sport they are providing in the harbour, and a glance at any of the points of vantage during the progress of the races, proves that interest is increasing and the fact that the distinguishing colours of the boats makes them recognisable at any distance and that there are no handicaps to be taken into account, makes the matches simple to follow.
Up to the present the weather has been by no means friendly to the new class of boats and owners have had much difficulty getting their sails stretched and rigging “tuned up” to best advantage, but it may be said experimental stages are now passed, and with decent weather the boats should from now on show their best form.

Wednesday's race [9 July] under the auspices of the RCYC was sailed in perfect weather, though rather more wind was wanted at times.

FP Friday 18 July, 1924: Flushing Sailing Club - A Fine Breeze
Una again captured the maximum points on Saturday's [12 July] races for the “Trevissome” Cup [Dowman] which put her well ahead of Flame.
There was a misunderstanding in connection with the non-appearance of Mr. Tuke's boat, that gentleman being informed by someone that there was no race.
Neither the Secretary of the Sailing Club nor the Sunbeam's Secretary knew anything about the matter, and it is very regrettable that anyone should make it their business to broadcast information that is not official.

FP 19 Sept. 1924. Flushing Sailing Club - How the Sunbeams have helped.
President H. G. Sicklemore: "We as a club, had the honour of being the first to know the new Sunbeam Class racing under our flag."
"We catered for six classes during the season. We feel grateful to the owners of the Sunbeams for providing us with a class of boats that has added so much to the interest of yacht racing to this locality and we are pleased through the generosity of Captain W. H. Dowman to offer a handsome silver Cup, the Trevissome Cup, for the Sunbeams."
"May I express my Committee's best thanks to Capt. H. L. Wilcox, Hon. Sec. of the Sunbeams, for the kind manner in which that gentleman has always met us in arranging races for this class." "The Sunbeams had been thoroughly successful. in Falmouth they were sailing a little differently from those on the Solent, where they had more choppy seas. He hoped that the class would increase in the locality.

FP Friday Sept. 19, 1924: Owners Change Boats
A very interesting race was sailed at Falmouth on Monday evening [15 Sept.] between the owners of the Sunbeam Class.
The owners changed boats, lots being drawn, and the helmsmen were: [in finishing order]
Berthe
Major C. Watson Smyth
Una
Capt. H. L. Wilcox, R. N.
Trent
Mr. C. P. Foster
Halcyone
Mr. H. Stedman
Merrythought
Mr. H. S. Tuke R. A.
Flame
Capt. C. R. Stephens
Little Lady
Mr. H. G. Sicklemore
A "change of helmsman" [race] had taken place previously in the season, and the race was then won by Berthe.
A strong S. breeze prevailed on Monday and the race was won again by Berthe.
Una, which has held the record for the season, was only 29 seconds behind. Trent finished 3 mins 10 secs behind the leading yacht. Halcyone following 1min 18 secs behind.  Merrythought was only 7 secs in the rear of Halcyone, and there was practically a dead heat between the latter craft and Flame, (1 sec behind). Little Lady gave up.

This class has given a remendous fillip to yacht racing at Falmouth this season and more than one visiting yacht expert [Capt. R. T. Dixon?] has declared that Falmouth has been the most interesting yachting centre west of Cowes.  Most interesting races have been held two or three times a week and the little craft so evenly matched that the least error in seamanship has robbed the leader of the race. Invariably there have been less than 30 seconds between the first three yachts; in fact, the man who succeeded in jockeying for the lead at the start, invariably kept it until the end of the race.
Falmouth owes a great debt to the Sunbeam Club for the splendid sport it has provided.

1925

FP Friday May 15, 1925: Falmouth Sunbeams - Preparation for Racing Season
The yachts belonging to the Falmouth Sunbeam class, which proved to be so popular last year, are getting ready for the approaching season.  They will begin their racing on 27th Instant under the flag of the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club. Mr C. P. Foster, of "Penvale" is the Captain of the class, and Capt. H. G. Wilcox R. N., of  1, Tehidy Terrace, the Hon. Secretary.
This year the class will number eight yachts, Mr. C. P. Foster's Maranui being a fresh arrival.    [CHECK! - Mead, p.125 states Maranui raced in September 1924.]

FP Friday May 22,  1925: Flushing Sailing Club - Opening Races Take Place in a Strong Breeze
The initial contest held on Saturday [16 May] under the auspices of the above club provided some capital racing, although there was rather a small entry, probably owing to the strong south-westerly breeze which made the Roads very choppy. The Sunbeams were much in the fore, five boats competing.  Little Lady gained a capital start.  The race proved a very close one. Little Lady held tenaciously to the lead and eventually crossed the line 31 seconds in front.  Una gave up, owing to a small mishap.

FP Friday June 12, 1925: Flushing Sailing Club - A Fine Breeze. Little Lady carried away mast.
Brilliant sunshine and a first rate sailing breeze made the second* of the series of races inaugurated under the auspices of the village Sailing Club a very successful affair.  There was an incident which marred the sport - Capt. W. H. Wilcox's Little Lady fouling another boat and carrying away her mast just before the start. This was the first race for the Trevissome Cup and Berthe drew “first blood” by capturing maximum points. There was a keen tussle between Una and Flame for second place.
The boats finished in the order named. Six boats started. Maranui and Little Lady being absent.
Berthe;  Una;  Flame; Halcyone; Merrythought; Trent

[The first Flushing SC race in 1925 was held on 16 May. The second 'weekly race for Sunbeams' might be expected to have been on Saturday 23 May...the third on 30 May, etc. The above would appear to refer to Saturday 6 June, i.e the Saturday preceding publication of the Packet.]

FP Friday July 17, 1925: Flushing Sailing Club: Little Lady Wins Fine Race. [Sat 11 July]
In glorious sunshine and with a splendid breeze, Flushing sailing Club's weekly races were a huge success. The Sunbeams created a very pretty spectacle as they “jockeyed” about before the start. Little Lady won an excellent contest with 3 minutes in hand, Berthe being second.

FP Friday July 24, 1925: Yachting - Falmouth Competitors at Plymouth
Several Falmouth yachts have been competing at the various Regattas which have been held in Plymouth during the week. At the Royal Corinthian Yacht Club Regatta on Tuesday [21 July] Falmouth Sunbeams (one-design) Class. First prize £5, 2nd £3, 3rd £1.
The inside course was used three times around, about 12 nautical miles. This class provided particularly keen racing, less than 3 minutes separating the boats at the completion of the first round, when Little Lady was 13 seconds ahead of Una, which was only 12 seconds ahead of Berthe.  At the end of the second circuit, Little Lady was still to the fore and, with Una, had drawn slightly away from the remainder, Halcyone lying to the rear. During the last round, Berthe got the better of Little Lady and Una, and got the first gun 32 seconds before Little Lady.
Tuesday: Berthe 4.30.16; Little Lady 30.48; Una 31.8;  Maranui 40.8; Halcyone 43.22
At the Port of Plymouth Regatta on Wednesday, Sunbeams were required to go three times round the inside course - about 10  miles. With a freshening breeze the boats gave a fine display and provided one of the best races of the day. When they completed the first circuit, only seconds separated them.  Halcyone had a slight advantage during the second round, but the remainder came in a bunch. They separated slightly during the final round, but Halcyone remained with the van.
Wednesday: Halcyone 3. 59.50; Una 4.1.11; Berthe 4.1.52; Little Lady 4.2.26; Maranui 4.2.31.
Thursday: Berthe was 1st. Little Lady 2nd., Halcyone 3rd.

FP Friday July 24, 1925: RCYC Corinthian Race

FP Friday July 31, 1925: Yachting - Further wins at Plymouth.
At the Royal SWYC's Regatta at Plymouth on Friday [24th]
Falmouth Sunbeam one-designs' class.
The five boats were on the line smartly and during the first run back from the Breakwater were bunched together. They passed too close to Drake's Island, in view of the state of the tide, so much so that Una and Berthe took the ground. Berthe got off again in  minute or two and continued the race, but Una was not so fortunate. She lowered her mainsail, and at the same time was able to move but she took no further part in the race. Little Lady maintained her lead during the second and third circuits but Berthe came up in front of Maranui, with Halcyone last.
